Coder Kid Profile: John

Coder Kids is running a series of Coder Kid Profiles, showcasing some of our awesome students and their perspectives on coding. We have been granted permission to use names and photos of all the students highlighted in our series.

John has been a Coder Kid for 3 semesters now, and we’ve loved having him. From making games on Scratch to building empires in Cataan to constructing worlds with Minecraft, John is a builder at heart.

What do you like most about Coder Kids?

I like learning how to code here because before, I didn’t have the tools to code and my parents don’t know how to code. Also, some of my friends are here like Darwin (see his Student Profile here). Coder Kids is fun, especially because I get to sit next to my friends and it’s a good environment.

How long have you been with the after school program, and how have you grown as a coder since then?
I was here all of last year and this semester. Last year we did block coding on Scratch, but now I’m learning HTML, Python, and JavaScript. I feel like moving from block coding to actual coding has helped me, and I enjoy writing actual code more.

What are you learning this year?
This year I’m learning HTML which is the coding language where you make websites, and I’m also learning Python and JavaScript which you use to make games.

Since you’re learning 3 different languages, is it hard to switch between them?
Well, a little bit but there’s documents that can help you remember what to do with the code.

What are your goals for learning coding?
My goals are to make a game that is not on website, like using an actual program. I’m not sure what kind of game I want to make, maybe like a maze game.

What made you want to come to Coder Kids?

I thought it looked fun, and this is the 21st century so it will come in handy.

Do you have a favorite project that you’ve made?

I liked making the Romeyogurt and Spooniet project with HTML. For Scratch, I liked remaking the Flappy Bird game. I’m also working on a Ninja game. I’m sort of off and on on it, so I do a little bit and then I stop and go back to it later.

Do you have a career path or dream job?
I have no idea! Maybe something related to coding.

What’s your favorite subject in school?

I like math because it’s always the same answer: 1 + 1 can’t be 3, it’s always going to be 2.

What do you like to do outside of coding?
After I do my homework, I go on the computer and watch YouTube, play games, or sometimes I do coding using CodeCombat. I would say I spend about 15 minutes every other day outside of class coding on my own.

My favorite YouTuber is Dantdn. He makes gaming videos, and I like watching him play Minecraft and other random games.

I play Minecraft and some Steam games, especially the Escapist II.

I’m on a swim team at Rice University, and I practice for an hour a day, 3 days a week.

I also like to play board games like Cataan. Yesterday, I played for 4 hours. I like it because you can build a whole entire empire.

I also like to watch MacGyver on TV. It was an old show, and now they’re making a new one. It’s about this guy who works for the U.S. government, and he goes out on missions and makes all sorts of crazy things like a bomb out of paper clips.
